Cognyte, an Israeli intelligence technology company, has won a tender in 2020 to sell a cutting-edge cyber intelligence system and systems that will intercept Myanmar’s telephone lines, according to Justice For Myanmar, which exposes businesses related to Myanmar’s military generals, on January 15.
NASDAQ-listed Cognyte, a security technology stock exchange, has won a tender from Myanma Communications (MPT), a mobile operator, to intercept and monitor mobile phone users. Since the coup, the regime has expanded electronic surveillance to monitor the communications and location of pro-democracy activists and journalists. Israel is making illegal transfers of defense equipment to Myanmar.
Representatives for Cognyte, Myanmar’s military government and MPT did not respond to multiple Reuters requests for comment. Japan’s KDDI Corp and Sumitomo Corp, which have stakes in MPT, declined to comment, saying they were not privy to details on communication interception.
Justice for Myanmar says there is no plan to protect Burmese people from the dangers of electronic surveillance by the military. Justice for Myanmar has stated that doing this is a crime against humanity.
