On May 2nd the 17th conference of the Karen National Union (KNU) continued today and Pado Saw Kwel Htoo Win was elected as the 10th president. The 17th Karen National Union (KNU) conference was held on April 24 at a place in the Karen remote area.
More than 100 representatives from (7) brigades attended and 56 representatives were elected. It is learned that Pado Saw Kwel Htoo Win, who served as the vice-chairman in the previous term, was elected as the chairman in the re-election through a secret ballot system. Representatives from all (7) brigades attended the Karen National Union (KNU) conference.
Representatives from Brigade (2) from Taung Gu District, and Brigade (5) from Muttaw district participated in the discussion, but they did not participate in voting and electing the new leaders.
Since the establishment of KNU, Saw San Po Thin was the first president in 1947, and Saw Ba Oo Kyi from 1947 to 1950, Sakaw Laetaw from 1950 to 1953, Saw Han Tatha Hmwe from 1953 to 1963, Man Bazan from 1963 to 1975, General Saw Bo Mya from 1976 to 2000; Pado Saw Bathe Sein from 2000 to 2008, General Saw Tar Malabaw from 2008 to 2012, and General Saw Mutu Sae Paw from 2012 to 2023, respectively, Pado Saw Kwel Htoo Win became the 10th KNU president.
