It is reported that there are up to 50 political prisoners on hunger strike, including Monywa strike leader Ko Wai Mo Naing, in Monywa Prison in Sagaing Region.
They are protesting because the prison authorities under the military council have restricted parcels from families to the prisoners as well as confiscating the items brought into the prison with permission. On September 8, the army, police, the General Administration Department, and a special search team including the fire department entered Monywa prison and confiscated the belongings of the prisoners such as books, clothes, and accessories.
After that, on September 9th, 14 political prisoners initially started a hunger strike to return their property. It is reported that they requested to be allowed to send parcels to the prison freely and to take full responsibility for their health if they are not healthy or sick.
However, because the prison authorities did not comply with the demands of the hunger strikers, 36 other political prisoners, including the Monywa community strike leader, Ko Wai Mo Naing, joined the hunger strike again.
