The Chin Association of Maryland, based in the United States of America, will hold a discussion event on June 27 with the release of a report on the issue of Chin refugees in Mizoram.
The event will be held at the Open Society Foundations in Washington, D.C., on June 27 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and will discuss the Chin Association of Maryland’s report, “ Chin Refugees in Mizoram, India: Helping Refugees and Supporting the Local Communities that Welcome Them,” the Chin Association of Maryland announced on June 14. Chin Association of Maryland Reverend Tim Siemens, CAM Board Chairman, Matthew Wilch, Advisor and Zo Tum Hmung, Executive Director visited New Delhi and Mizoram, India from March 10th to 24th to assess and study the situation of Chin and Myanmar refugees. The recommendations are said to have been submitted.
“I saw Mizoram State Govt and NGOs and churches welcoming Chin and other refugees with open arms,” said Matthew Wilch, CAM consultant and author of the report. “ But refugees and the communities that welcome them also need help from the international community,” said Matthew Wilch.
Political instability due to the military coup in Myanmar; To escape the military conflict and the arrests and killings by the military council forces, a large number of Myanmar citizens had to flee to the neighboring country of India. In India, Mizoram state is the state where Burmese citizens, especially Chin people, have fled to take refuge there.
According to the Mizoram state government’s statistics, more than 30,000 people have fled the war in Mizoram state alone. CAM Executive Director Pu Zo Tum Hmung said that Myanmar’s war refugees who fled to India need humanitarian assistance and international organizations such as the United Nations should provide assistance.
“Refugees need more protection and humanitarian aid. UNHCR UNICEF UN agencies including WFP and other relevant UN agencies will be able to help solve this issue,” said Pu Zo Tum Hmung.
“ On the other hand, more than a million internally displaced people in Chin State and neighboring Sagaing and Magway regions should cross the India-Myanmar border and receive aid to protect them and meet their dire humanitarian needs,” he added.
