Economist Sean Turnell has asked the Australian government to sanction two state-owned Myanmar banks, which are the main support for the military council.
State Investment and Commercial Bank (MICB); On September 12th, Sean Turnell said that Australia should have sanctioned the Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank (MFTB) just like the United States.
Sean Turnell, who worked as Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s business advisor during the National League for Democracy (NLD) government, was arrested and imprisoned after the military coup and was released last November. Julia Angrisano, general secretary of the Finance Sector Union, an Australian-based non-profit organization, expressed her support for Sean Turnell’s request.
The US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) announced in June this year that it has sanctioned state-owned MICB Bank and MFTB Bank because the coup army used them to purchase military equipment.
