The coup leader General Min Aung Hlaing and his members visited Rakhine state and visited the Kaladan
Multi-Modal Transit Transportation Project, according to the junta-owned newspapers. Admiral Tin Aung San, Union Minister of the Ministry of Transport and Communications under the Military Council, explained about the Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transportation Project.
The leader and members of the military coup visited the project site and met with Indian Consul General
Mr Bibekananda Bhattamishra in Sittwe town to discuss the project’s progress.
The project, which is a strategic project of the Indian government, includes the construction of Sittwe Port
from the mouth of the Kalatan River in Rakhine State; Construction of Palatwa port and dredging of the
Kalatan River have been completed, but the construction of a 109-kilometer two-lane highway that will
connect from Palatwa in Chin State to Zorinpoi, the border of the two countries, has not begun yet. The
two-lane highway consists of two sections, the section connecting Palatwa to Kalewa and the 41.5-
kilometer section connecting Kalewa to Zorinpoi.
The details of the highway’s construction are set out in a new contract signed between India’s Ministry of
External Affairs and project implementation firm (PIA) IRCON International Limited. IRCON International
Limited is a state-owned enterprise of the Indian Ministry of Railways.
This project was started only 12 years ago and has been repeatedly delayed. The project is scheduled to
be completed in 2023, but due to the current situation in Myanmar, it is difficult to complete the project.
